The new kid at school

Are you the new kid at school? Want to make friends? Here are some ideas from teens (and one mother) who have “been there.”
Locate everything you need for school the night before, and get up early so you won’t have to rush. (This was the mom’s idea)
Before leaving the house, sing, dance or giggle about something. These activities will relax you, and you’ll start the day on a light-hearted note.
Speak up. Even if you are shy, other people don’t know that.
Talk to people near your locker.
Scope out a lunch buddy by chatting with people in your first few classes.
Join an activity which interests you. You’ll meet others who “speak your language.”
Introduce the real you. Be true to yourself.
Pay attention to the way people dress. This could give you clues about their hobbies.
Some schools offer peer guides to help new students get settled in the first few days. Ask about them.
Smile. Be approachable. Keep your sense of humor.
Remember: You are not the only new student. Lots of kids are going through the same thing.
And finally--relax. The first day of school will seem like ancient history by next week.
