Wishing to add some red, white and blue to commonplace picnic items, and while contemplating those personalized candy bar wrappers new parents use to announce, “It’s a Boy (or Girl),” this idea struck me—what about wrapping party items in festive papers?

Since a July picnic isn’t the scene for melty chocolate bars, other candy would work just fine. Little boxes of Nerds and DOTS candies provide easy-to-wrap boxes. Small packets of Pop Rocks are quick to do and could serve as anticipation for the big fireworks show of the evening. Even juice boxes can be wrapped in short order (peel straws from boxes beforehand, and leave straw hole area exposed).

If you don’t feel like messing with the computer for graphics, set the kids to designing their own 4th of July-themed papers and leave the masters to their work. Preparing for a party is almost as much fun as the party itself—and it keeps the little ones busy while other preparations are under way.

Happy Independence Day!
