Gas prices tweak world record attempt

Lake Saint Louis
Lake Saint Louis Chiropractor, John Curtin, is engulfed in his summer project of setting a world record called the P3 Triathlon Tour. An unfortunate twist, however, has not deflated the doctor’s enthusiasm.
Record high gas prices have forced Curtin to stay closer to home during the week, usually keeping him in Missouri. His original itinerary took him to various states, some as distant as Hawaii.
“I have had to pay $4.07 at one gas station,” Curtin said.
On the weekends, Curtin visits neighboring states. Recently he’s been in Topeka and Lawrence Kansas. In Lawrence, Curtin completed the half Ironman in six hours and 12 minutes.
Curtin’s goal is to complete 100 triathlons in 100 days in over 9 states. The world record attempt began on May 31 and will continue through Sept. 7, 2008.
The motivator for Curtin’s world record attempt is to raise money for Missouri KidsFirst. Though he has recently appeared on Topeka WIBW Channel 13 News and was featured in various newspapers, Curtin said he’s disappointed that staying closer to home limits spreading the word about Missouri Kids First.
He is, however, grateful for race directors who allow him to speak at the races. He said that announcements are often made during the triathlons.
Where does he find the time?
“I get up at 4:30 or 5:00 a.m. to start my day with a triathlon,” Curtin said. This daily two- to three- hour workout is completed before his workday begins. If he’s pressed for time, he’ll do a triathlon course in the early evening after work.
“As for my health, I’m feeling great,” Curtin said.
“Wish me luck.”
