Organics, solar and wind: the future
September 17, 2009
Lake Saint Louis, MO
by Kris Kolk
Are you interested in learning how to grow your own organic food? How about a quick education on solar and wind power?
Greene’s Country Store is set to host monthly classes on these topics. What’s even better? These classes are free. The next sessions are scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 19.
The subject of organics will be covered by local organic farmer, Chris Wimmer; and renewable energy topics will be explained by a representative from the Energy Savings Store.
These are quite timely issues, and we would be wise to absorb as much information as possible.
Sept. 19 Schedule (each session one-hour long)
3:00 p.m.—Why grow your own organic food?
Benefits such as nutrition, frugality, exercise, less pesticides as well as environmental and fossil fuel concerns are explored.
4:15 p.m.—How to grow your own organic food.
Healthy soil, raised beds, responsible water usage, beneficial critters and drafting a garden plan will all be discussed.
5:30 p.m.—Consumers’ guide to renewable energy (solar/wind).
Explanations are planned regarding: energy efficiency, how solar works, heating a home and water with solar electricity, planning for solar during the building stage as well as a discussion on the basics of wind energy and financial incentives and paybacks.
