Foundry Art Centre to host Poetry Out Loud contest

The Foundry Art Centre has partnered with the National Endowment for the Arts and will host the Regional Finals of the Poetry Out Loud contest on Wed., Feb. 18 at 10 a.m. at the Centre, 520 North Main Center in St. Charles. The public is invited to attend at no charge. Participating high schools and students are:

The Poetry Out Loud program encourages high school students to memorize and perform great poems and invites the dynamic aspects of slam poetry, spoken word and theater in English classes. The program helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence and learn more about their heritage.

Poetry Out Loud is a collaboration of The Foundry Art Centre, Missouri Arts Council, Mosaics Missouri Festival for the Arts, Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, Missouri Association of Community Arts Agencies Poetry Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts.

The Foundry Art Centre is a fine arts gallery overlooking the Missouri River at 520 North Main Center, in the Frenchtown district of Historic St. Charles. The Foundry features a Smithsonian-caliber art gallery hosting national juried exhibitions plus 20 working artist studios where visitors can watch the creative process and buy art directly from the artists. The not-for-profit art centre also provides community meeting rooms, event space and a children’s art gallery. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, noon to 4 p.m. Admission is free and donations are welcome.
