Meet artist Marty Linson
August 20, 2008
Lake Saint Louis
A sculpture will be unveiled at The Meadows Grand Opening in Lake Saint Louis on Sat., Aug. 23. The creator of the anticipated sculpture, which will be located near the clock tower, is local artist, Marty Linson.
Born in St. Charles, Linson was raised in an artistic family. He sculpted flowers for his future wife, and jokingly said maybe that’s what she liked about him.
Linson has an Associate’s Degree in Graphic Arts, a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Master’s Degree in Studio Art.
To begin the process of the sculpture at the Meadows, Linson worked on some preliminary drawings of what “meadows” might look like. The final piece represents a cluster of cattails and leaves and is made from 100% fabricated sheet metal.
The artist has worked for 11 years in bronze and he considers himself fortunate to have worked under famous St. Louis sculptors, Don Wiegand and Harry Weber.
Linson is well-known around St. Louis, recently recognized for creating the bust of the late Lindenwood University President, Dennis C. Spellmann. The bust is located in Spellmann Center at the university.
Linson is sometimes privately commissioned in homes and also creates memorials marking gravestones. He is represented by Fine Art Ltd. in Chesterfield.
He said that he doesn’t really pursue the gallery or museum route, but is more often commissioned for certain projects. He stressed that even when working on a commissioned piece, there is still a part of him which resides in the final creation.
He conducts lectures on the bronze process, patinas and finishes at various colleges and has taught at Lindenwood University. He also teaches private lessons.
He said that he enjoys teaching students how to use what they have.
“I love to teach, to take what I’ve learned and give to someone else,” said Linson.
The public is invited to witness the unveiling of the sculpture at The Meadows this Sat. at 9:45 a.m.
