At least two Valentines are typically honored on the 14th of February. Valentine of Rome and Valentine of Terni both died martyrs and are buried in the Via Flaminia.
The origin of our modern Valentine's Day was in the Middle Ages, with the exchange of handwritten notes between lovers.
The traditional handwritten notes of the past were replaced by the familiar greeting card in the 19th Century. In the past 50 years, it has become commonplace for lovers to exchange a gift as well as a card on Valentine’s Day.
It is estimated that more than a billion valentines are exchanged every year, with the vast majority of cards purchased by women.
