Single Stream recycling in schools

The Wentzville School District is introducing a pilot program in several of its schools that will simplify recycling, cut down on the District’s waste and save money.
The District is teaming up with its waste removal provider, Allied Waste Services (St. Louis), along with Resource Management—one of the largest recycling companies in the country—to initiate the program.
‘Single Stream’ refers to the idea that all acceptable recycle material can now be combined in recycling bins and does not need to be separated. This will allow the District to recycle more material, thereby cutting down on the amount of waste that needs to be hauled away.
Carol Harvey, Director of Purchasing for the District, said the administration anticipates they will be able to reduce the amount of trash going to local landfills by 45-50%. She also estimates the cost savings to the District will reach $5,000 - $7,000 each year. “This is good for the environment and cost effective for the District as well,” said Harvey.
The program begins this month at Timberland High School, South Middle School and Boone Trail Elementary. Harvey said she expects all schools to be participating by the end of the school year.
