A group of Wentzville teachers completed eight hours of archery training on Saturday, January 23 at Duello Elementary through the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) and the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP). The goal of the program is to “teach kids the basics of archery as a part of school curriculum” according to the MDC website.
A representative from MDC runs the training, and each teacher that completes it qualifies for $500 in archery equipment for their school. Teachers that completed the training at Duello were: Hester Menier, Art Teacher/Camp Director at Duello Elementary; Mernie Maestas, Librarian/Camp Director at Peine Ridge Elementary; David Porter, PE instructor/Camp Director for Duello and Prairie View Elementary Schools; Adrienne Pivac, PE instructor at Prairie View; David Bates, 5th grade teacher/ Camp Director at Crossroads Elementary; and Bill Schonover, PE instructor at Timberland High School.
Together the teachers qualified for $3,500 in archery equipment for the Wentzville School District. According to Porter, the money will be used to buy two sets of archery equipment for the 4th grade camp program, elementary physical education classes and for possible archery clubs at the elementary level. Timberland High School will also be receiving equipment as a result of Schonover’s participation.
