Natural beauty abounds in St. Charles County, but all too often our breath-taking vistas are spoiled by old tires, garbage, and other useless items. Once again this year, the St. Charles County Division of Environmental Services is working with the Greenway Network to clean up our lakes, rivers, and streams.

On Saturday, April 5, people from all over St. Charles County will work together to “take out the trash” in the sixth annual Operation Clean Stream. For three hours, volunteers armed with trash bags will scour the Dardenne, Peruque, and Spencer Creek watersheds to collect debris. After a hard day scouting out scrap, the volunteers will enjoy lunch together and take pride in a job well done.

A unique component of the event is the Stream Trash ART program. Artist Joseph Farmer and a team of volunteers will be working on site at Quail Ridge Park, using materials found during the cleanup to create a sculpture that reminds everyone to help keep our streams and rivers clean.

Families, organizations, and individuals can register for Operation Clean Stream by calling (636) 949-7415. Participants who register by March 25 will receive a free Operation Clean Stream T-shirt. To learn more about Operation Clean Stream, log on to www.greenwaynetwork.org.

Operation Clean Stream is sponsored by Greenway Network, the St. Charles County Division of Environmental Services, Missouri Stream Team, the Open Space Council, the Missouri Department of Conservation, and the cities of Cottleville, Dardenne Prairie, Lake Saint Louis, O’Fallon, St. Charles, St. Peters, and Wentzville. Support is also provided by Brookside Environmental Services, George Butler Associates, the Natural Resources Conservation Service, and Wal-Mart.
