Aldi being built in Lake Saint Louis nears completion
November 30, 2007
Lake Saint Louis, MO—Aldi is building a store on Hawk Ridge Trail in Lake Saint Louis. The partially-built structure is across from Taco Bell on the opposite side of Highway N.
An official with the Lake Saint Louis building department told sccworlds.com that it’s possible for the store to open as early as the end of January, 2008. However, weather and other variables may put opening day a little later.
The store is known for their discounted items and no frills interiors. There is minimal staff in each store and there are no cart attendants. A quarter is required to access a shopping cart, and the shopper is refunded a quarter when the cart is returned to the corral.
Aldi charges for bags, but patrons are encouraged to bring their own bags or find empty merchandise boxes within the store. Long checkout lines are common. Dedicated Aldi shoppers seem to accept the lackluster shopping experience as they expect low prices in return.
Aldi is based in Germany and also has stores in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. There are about 850 stores in 26 states in the USA.
The Albrecht family started the business in 1913. The word “Aldi” is short for “Albrecht Discount.”
