Fire Department called to Fort Zumwalt South Middle

Firefighters were called to Fort Zumwalt South Middle School on 300 Knaust Drive last Friday on reports of a strange smell.
According to Fire Chief Scott Avery of the O’Fallon Fire Department, firefighters were unable to find any smoke or fire. He said the odor “smelled like rubber.”
Firemen canvassed the roof of the building for several minutes. Rooftop ventilation units were checked for any concerns, but none were found.
Avery said the fire crew arrived about 15 minutes before school let out for the day, and they remained on site until students were dismissed.
The matter was turned over to the school’s maintenance department.
