The O’Fallon Police Department is looking for the owner of 25 – 30 pound tortoise found Tuesday, July 8, wandering through Royal Oaks subdivision in north O’Fallon. Dana Hayes, an animal control officer for the City, picked up the brown and sand-colored tortoise after a resident spotted it in her backyard. (A tortoise is a terrestrial turtle that lives mainly on land, like Missouri’s native box turtles.)

The animal seems healthy and comfortable with humans. It has been turned over to a veterinarian for care.

To claim the tortoise, the owner should call the O’Fallon Police Department at (636) 240-3200, and be prepared to prove ownership.
