The St. Charles County Assessor’s Office has scheduled three presentations to assist seniors and the disabled in obtaining a credit or rebate on their real estate taxes.
There are two programs in Missouri, the Homestead Preservation Credit and the Property Tax Credit, available for those who qualify.
To qualify for the Homestead Preservation Credit, you must have paid property taxes in 2005, 2006 and 2007, and your property taxes must have increased by more than 5 percent in 2007 over what you paid in 2006. If married, one spouse must be 65 or older and the other one must be at least 60 by Jan. 1 of this year. In addition, your adjusted gross income must be less than $77,323. This program also is available to those who are 100 percent disabled.
The Property Tax Credit program also applies to seniors and the disabled, and your total income must not be more than $25,000 for single filers or $27,000 for those filing a joint return. This includes Social Security benefits.
If you’d like to learn more about these programs, the Assessor’s Office will hold information sessions from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, May 13, at Cottleville City Hall, 5377 Highway N; from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 14, at the Lake Saint Louis Civic Center, 200 Civic Center Drive; and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 11, at the New Melle Sports and Recreation Center, 4700 Highway Z. More programs may be scheduled in the future.
“We’re striving to get the public more involved in the process, and these sessions are specifically designed to help senior and disabled taxpayers take advantage of programs already in place in Missouri,” said County Assessor Scott Shipman.
