Family Camping Expo at Klondike Park
May 14, 2008
St. Charles County
Enjoy a fun-filled weekend amongst the budding trees, twinkling stars and flickering campfire at the St. Charles County Parks Department’s Family Camping Expo June 7 and 8 at nearby Klondike Park.
Park Rangers will lead this overnight program, where participants will learn camping and outdoor skills while enjoying the outdoors just minutes from their homes. The program will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday with a brief introduction to camping and instruction on how to pitch a tent.
The afternoon will offer sessions on knot tying, hiking, mountain biking, fire building, dutch-oven cooking and campfire cooking. Following dinner, guests may join a fishing derby at Klondike Lake and view the stars of St. Charles County with telescopes provided. Festivities will conclude Sunday morning with opportunities for more fishing, bike riding and hiking.
The Family Camping Expo costs just $15 per person, and children four and under are free. Fishing equipment, dinner Saturday, and snacks are included; but guests may bring their own materials, if preferred.
Participants should also plan to bring a tent, bedding, lunch on Saturday, drinks and bug spray. Advanced registration before May 30 is required, as the program is limited to 50 participants.
Located at 4600 Highway 94 South, approximately 14 miles south of the Highway 40/94 interchange, Klondike Park also features six cabins and 41 tent sites open to year-round camping—a shower house complete with flush toilets and a small kitchen is open from April to November.
The wood-framed cabins sleep up to eight guests and come equipped with a ceiling fan, electrical service, beds with mattresses (no linens) and an indoor table. For a true camping experience, 10 basic tent sites provide a tent pad, covered table, fire ring and lantern post; while 31 primitive tent sites offer tent space, a table and fire ring.
Cabins rent for $65 per night and tent sites are $10 per night for basic or $7 per night for primitive. Advanced registrations are required for the cabins, but reservations or walk-ins (on a space-available basis) are welcomed for the tent sites.
