If you would like to spend more time volunteering this year, you’re in luck. The St. Charles County Parks Department seeks volunteers interested in improving and extending the parks’ trail system, planning and operating special events and establishing the historical preservation program.

On selected Saturdays from January through May, volunteers will assist the Department by clearing overhead and ground obstructions along the trail routes in the County’s regional parks. Both individuals and groups are welcomed, but all involved should dress for the weather, wear sturdy shoes and bring water. A safety and tool-usage seminar will open the session and lunch will be provided at the end of the workday.

Trail Work Days are planned from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on:

January 10 at Indian Camp Creek Park (meet at Shelter #6)
January 24 at Louis H. Bangert Memorial Wildlife Area (meet at the trailhead)
February 7 at Indian Camp Creek Park (meet at Shelter #6)
March 7 at Matson Hill Park (call for location)
April 4 at Matson Hill Park (call for location)
April 18 at Klondike Park (meet at shower house)
May 16 at Klondike Park (meet at shower house)

Program and event volunteers will help with registration, presentation and logistics during the more than 100 activities planned inside the parks in 2009. Among the programs needing volunteer assistance are the YAP (Youth Activity Park) Easter Egg Hunt, Earth Day Extravaganza, Paws in the Park, Park Explorer Kids Club and Wild in the Woods Trail Run Series. Individuals interested in working at programs involving children must have a county-issued background check on file with the department.

Interested individual and group volunteers should contact Doug Bolnick at the St. Charles County Parks Department by phone at 636-949-7535 or email at dbolnick@sccmo.org to register. Walk-ups are also welcomed at the Trail Work Days.

Volunteers are also requested for efforts to establish the department’s historical preservation program. Activities will include inventory, collections management refurbishment and research.

Those interested in assisting with the historical efforts should contact County Historian Ryan Graham by phone at 636-949-7900 x7634 or by email at rgraham@sccmo.org.
