“Summer Barnstormers” event approaching

Did you know that St. Charles County Government owns and operates an airport?

Smartt Field, off Grafton Ferry Road in the Portage des Sioux area, will be showcased on Aug. 23-24 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. during its open house called “Summer Barnstormers.”

The open house will feature vintage aircraft, “war birds” and the Commemorative Air Force World War II B-25 and Museum will also be on display.

Youth, ages 8 to 17, are offered free aircraft rides from the Experimental Aircraft Association. The first 100 to sign up each day of the event will be guaranteed a free ride.

Food and drink vendors, craft vendors, cars and clowns will also be on site. Kilroy’s Restaurant at the airport will be open for business as well.

Admission and parking are free. The only costs to visitors will be for food and drink. (Visitors are not allowed to bring food or beverage containers onto the airport grounds.)

To reach the airport from St. Charles, take Highway 94 north about 8 miles to Grafton Ferry Road. Turn left and go about 1.5 miles to the airport.
