Update

The remains found on Monday, November 12, have been identified as belonging to George Whitter, a St. Louis area man. Whitter was last seen leaving a South St. Louis bar with Randy Greenman. Greenman’s remains were discovered near Festus, Missouri in September.

Original story below

A human skull and some smaller bones were found yesterday in the brush on Highway 94 near Port Arrowhead in the West Alton area.

According to Lt. Craig McGuire of the St. Charles County Sheriff’s Department, the bones were discovered by a hunter who led authorities to the scene at about 4:30 p.m. yesterday. But because of rainy weather and darkness, they had to resume the investigation today when an anthropologist confirmed the bones as human remains. They are considering this a suspicious death so far.

Lt. McGuire said that their focus right now is on collecting evidence for submission to the medical examiner.

He mentioned that this procedure will go similarly as a separate case from April of 2006 in which hikers found human bones in Ellis Island (near the Clark Bridge in the West Alton area). About a month later, the bones were found to be those of Lawrence G. Gray of Florissant.  Mr. Gray apparently drove his vehicle into the Mississippi River, after telling his wife he might kill himself.

Lt. McGuire estimates the results in this new case also to take a couple of months for identification.
