Former mayor of New York, Rudy Giuliani, held an open press event at the Columns Banquet Center in St. Charles today.

World War II Veteran, Bill Rupp, led the crowd with the pledge of allegiance.

Senator Kit Bond and his wife, Linda, were in attendance. Senator Bond introduced Rudy Giuliani as “the next president of the United States.”

On Veteran’s Day, Mayor Giuliani started his speech by giving recognition to veterans and the current military. He said that there have been at least 23 attempts here and overseas of American attacks that have been stopped by the military. “They are the only reason we’re safe here in America,” Giuliani said.

Giuliani said he’s done three important things in New York: reduced crime, reduced welfare and revived New York. Giuliani said, “There are 640,000 fewer people on welfare the day I left office.”

Mayor Giuliani said he would be committed to ending illegal immigration if elected president. He said that the technology exists to do it. He mentioned issuing a tamper-proof ID card for non-citizens. According to joinrudy2008.com, these cards would be biometric. If elected president, Giuliani said he would propose the Secure Authorized Foreign Entry Card (SAFE Card) for all non-citizen workers and students.

One way Mayor Giuliani said he would cut spending as president, would be to reduce the Federal and Civilian workforce through attrition and retirement. He said he would only replace half of the outgoing workers. This would force others to take on more duties. He estimates doing this would save $20 to 24 billion each year.

Another way Mayor Giuliani said he would cut spending as president is by encouraging agencies to identify five percent in spending reductions.

He said that if taxes are raised, American jobs are lost. He mentioned that France wants to lower taxes, because they are losing business to the United Kingdom. He said that the United States has the second highest corporate tax in the world and that lowering taxes is critical to keeping jobs in the country. “Money today is very mobile,” Giuliani said. He said that the USA is losing money to places like Bermuda and Ireland.

Finally, Giuliani tackled the Iraq war topic. He said his first commitment as president would be to prepare an offense in the “Islamic terrorist war against us.” He mentioned that the Patriot Act and electronic surveillance are needed for safety and that they are necessary to be victorious in this war.

After the meeting, sccworlds.com spoke with State Representative, Cynthia L. Davis regarding her thoughts on Mr. Giuliani’s speech. She said she wanted to hear what Mr. Giuliani was going to say on illegal immigration and taxation. “I needed to hear new ideas,” she said.
