Restaurant Review
54th Street Grill & Bar in Wentzville, Missouri
September 4, 2007
54th Street Grill & Bar opened for business just last week and word has spread. We arrived for lunch today at about 12:30 and had to wait about 10 minutes for an available table.
As we waited, we couldn’t help but notice the unique décor. If you can think of an item, 54th Street Grill & Bar has it hung on a wall or suspended from the ceiling. We saw a miniature astronaut, a huge fake gun, a cello, cigars, a bust of Elvis, a bass drum, a moose (or elk) wearing sunglasses and that was just the start. There are too many items to mention, many great conversation starters.
The two of us were seated at a large, round table apparently near the kitchen and restrooms. The foot traffic behind my chair was probably at least 12 people per minute. The other seats around the table were not much better. That table seemed to have been situated in the middle of a clover-leaf intersection of waiters, table-clearers and restroom searchers. We are not high maintenance diners, but as soon as the booth behind us cleared, we asked to relocate there. The booth made the difference between a lovely dining experience and wanting to bolt for the door.
Our server was considerate and upbeat, despite the lunchtime rush. All the servers seemed to be having a good time and working together. The lunch routine was working well.
The menu at 54th Street, the 5-4, is called American casual. They have a good selection of burgers, sandwiches and soups. I went cheap and ordered the lunch special ($6.49) burger with cheese and fries. The burger was huge, the bun toasted, and was served with lettuce, tomato, onion and pickle. I couldn’t finish the whole thing. It was extremely good.
My husband ordered the blackened Cajun burger and fries ($7.99). His burger was coated in Cajun spices and topped with fried onion strings, pepper jack cheese and jalapeno bacon. He enjoyed it and commented frequently about how spicy it was. He made it through on about five glasses of iced tea.
It is possible to eat inexpensively at 54th Street Grill and Bar. The lunch specials are $6.49 and there are inexpensive soup choices as well. The most expensive entrées on the menu are the $15.99 top-notch steak items. There is a large children’s menu, a selection of enticing desserts and specialty drinks. If you need dinner in a hurry, they offer call-ahead curbside service for to-go orders.
The food was excellent and the people were friendly. We will definitely go again.
