About 100 trucks convoyed down local highways today in an effort to maintain the Guinness Book of World Record status as the World’s Largest Truck Convoy (WLTC).

The St. Charles area convoy began and will end at the Family Arena, as truck drivers and law enforcement celebrate their support of the athletes of Special Olympics Missouri (SOMO).

The World's Largest Truck Convoy rolled through the area to benefit Special Olympics of Missouri.

The money raised for the organization will ensure the athletes can continue to train in year-round sports activities.

More than 2,000 truckers in 34 states and 5 Canadian provinces will participate. In 2007, the event raised nearly $700,000.

In 2001, the WLTC was established by Corp. Norm Schneiderhan, special project coordinator for the Orange County Sheriff’s Office in Florida. Schneiderhan was a truck driver for three years before entering the law enforcement field.

The Special Olympics provides opportunities for people with mental disabilities to build fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy. These Olympic-type sports events offer positive experiences with other athletes and the community.
