More than 750 people attended the WSMS Academic Explosion, an annual after-school event for the students, parents, and faculty of South Middle School. Each year there is a mix of hands-on, interactive events for the students and their families to enjoy, with a focus on academics.
“It’s a great chance for our students to show their work, and show off our school to parents,” said Principal Scott Swift. “The faculty and students really work together to pull this off!”
Several activity areas return every year, including the Book Fair, the Art Fair, the Science Fair, the Beatnik Café, and the Blood Drive, which collected 33 units of blood.
The gym housed the high school robotics team, the Ratchet Rockers, and their robot, which was very popular with the kids. This year there was also a medieval hall, with a castle entrance, coats of arms, stockades, and hands-on science activities such as “The Crusher” and catapults. There was a jungle hall, with rainforest art and a jungle jail.
Lucky parents were thrown in jail and required to answer five questions from the middle school curriculum to gain their freedom.
“There are a lot of fun activities, and I like to see all of the art,” said Madi, a 7th grader. “But the best part is getting to put your parents in jail!”
