Heavy rains keep local rescue crews in action
May 25, 2008
St. Charles County
Sunday night’s storms created an active night for local emergency workers. Flooding on the roadways made some normal routes impassible, forcing responders to find alternate routes. Highway 61 was shut down at Dietrich Road as well as at Highway A. State was expected to close Highway P from Hoff Road to Highway 61. Mette Road at the county line was barricaded.
Calls began pouring in shortly after 9:00 p.m. St. Louis County water rescue teams were called to assist with St. Charles County rescues.
Some of the reported incidents, mostly near Wentzville, were:
A call was made for a water rescue from a vehicle in the area of Morrison and Highway N.
Water rescue of two occupants from a vehicle in the area of Mexico Road and Marble Road (near Highway A). Reports indicated the vehicle was filling up with water.
An officer was in a cruiser in the area of Highways 61 and W. Water was reported to be up to the vehicle doors.
A woman needed rescued in the Josephville area, near a church. Water was reported up to the hood of her car.
A house on Rouen Court in Lake Saint Louis was reported flooded and occupants needed assistance with evacuation.
About five people were trapped in vehicles and in a home on Highway P and Parr Road.
On Highway P, about 100 feet west of Mette Road, a water rescue from a vehicle was conducted.
Vehicles were reported in the water at Scotti Road and North Point Prairie Road in Wentzville.
Business 61 in Wentzville, underneath the railroad trestle, was flooded.
Basements on Northview Avenue in Wentzville were flooded. One reportedly had 8 feet of water in the basement and an odor of gas. Another reported electrical arching in the basement. Ameren UE was called and the fire department assisted.
Two people needed rescued from a truck in the water at Highway MM and Highway P in Moscow Mills. Rescuers sent a boat for that incident.
There was water over the roadway at Highway N and Bryan Road in Dardenne Prairie as well as the Hawk Ridge area in Lake Saint Louis.
Most units were released back to their home bases by 11:50 p.m. as water levels began to recede.
