“Tale” Waggers event at Corporate Parkway Library

On Thursday evening, therapy dogs heard stories read to them by local children at Corporate Parkway library in Wentzville. About 20 people and three dogs participated at the event.

The pooches paid close attention to the stories being read to them and enjoyed special cuddles and treats. Books about dogs going to the vet, dogs taking baths and dogs helping others were popular story choices of the evening. The event was held in a conference room where tables held coloring sheets and crayons for those waiting to read.

The visiting dogs (a miniature poodle, border collie and border collie mix) are specially trained to interact in different situations, are certified to socialize with children and are also quite popular guests at local nursing homes.

The affair seemed to be a success, and the dog handlers expressed a desire to bring the dogs back routinely if the library wishes.

Therapy dogs are trained to provide comfort to people in settings such as hospitals, nursing homes, schools and hospice programs. Petting a dog relaxes people which can be measured by a slower heart rate and drop in blood pressure.
